Does eating seasonally really save money?

I’ve always known that eating seasonally tastes better, and that seasonal produce is always on sale at the grocery store, but I’ve often wondered just how much eating in season saves my budget. Then we found the dream property.

An old schoolhouse on six acres went up for sale in our area and I thought I’d do some research. What to do with six acres? I spoke to a farming consultant (they do exist) to figure out what the most profitable use of the farmland would be.

He said if he had six acres he would buy large scale greenhouses and grow out of season produce. “Out of season?! Why?!” By the look he gave me I think I sounded like he’d ask me to convert religions.

“Because I can take out of season produce to local farmer’s markets and restaurants and sell them for three times market value.”

THREE TIMES! So I now I know that eating in season cuts my grocery bill to a third of what it would be. Which means I shudder at the alternative.
